Gig Harbor, WA—There is an exclusive art show coming to Pierce County Library in Gig Harbor next month. So exclusive in fact, that the artworks have never before been seen by the public. The work represents the talent of the most dedicated students from Apprentice Academy, an art school founded by locally known and internationally recognized artist Mardie Rees. For parents that have ever wondered what their children are capable of artistically, the show is worth a look.
"My son’s love for art has turned into a passion due to Mardie’s incredible and patient art instruction," says Gig Harbor parent Sarah Larsen, "Mardie shares her vast experience and talent in her camps and classes, instructing each child in the fundamental techniques of art through differing mediums. He can’t wait till camp begins!"
The show will display a number of final 2-D compositions from last year's summer art camps. Mediums include pen-and-ink patterns, charcoal still lifes, and impressively colorful collages inspired by author Eric Carle.
Rees says her mission is to awaken passion for art in anyone regardless of age or circumstance, though she does pay particular attention to her young students.
"We are all born with a desire to be creative - to let our souls express themselves and to take risks", says Rees. "What we all need is someone to fan the flame. Being a parent is about recognizing who are children are inside and drawing it out of them. Even if art is not their ultimate lifepath, it can be a wonderful source of self-discovery."
The art show at the library is open to the public from April 2nd to June 3rd.
Apprentice Academy is located just over the Purdy Bridge in Gig Harbor. Painting, drawing and sculpture curriculums this year include "Sculpt your Wild Thing," "Painting a Story," "Edgar Degas' Horses," and "Cartooning and Speech Ballooning: Peanuts". Summer camps run from June 20th to September 1st 2016 for youth ages 5-16. Cost is $170 to $220 per 4-day session.
